YES! Jaff-Man TV!

Watch, how Mr. Jaffee has so much trouble "predicting" the Ansonia-HC game. Mike, on the other hand, has no problem picking games...clearly states everything...He's always comfortable in front of the camera (good hit, Boggs). Jaffman can't bring himself to say something bad about the Crusaders. It's like he physically can't do it. Maybe it's a mental block, like when hypnotists make people cluck like chickens every time they hear a bell. He won't make clear statements. He avoided making a call on the Crosby-Naugy game, until his partner forces him to state his opinion that Crosby will win (which is obvious to everyone that follows this league). This goes along with his need to write the human-interest, feel-good football stories. Sorry, Jaff, but you crack me up. Nothin' personal. On a more serious note, the message Jaffee makes at the end is something I wholeheartedly agree with.

Also, today, the Republican posted Jaffee's midseason awards. I don't think anyone can argue with his choices in the running for top players: Mike Osiecki and Billy Raggone are certainly the two best players I've seen this year. His candidates for coach of the year are nice picks as well: Joe Stochmal of Oxford and Dan Dunaj at Torrington. He only has one Ansonia Charger on the list, but found room for two HC Crusaders on the list...seems fishy. And I've got to say, I really appreciate that he's giving some love to Seymour's Jacob Drozd. If not for Mike Osiecki, I think he'd be the talk of the Wildcats defense. No Woodland Hawks or Torrington Red Raiders players listed, but I think that will change by the end of this year. John Murren or DJ Williams should get mention soon enough. Plus, after watching Dion Ojoe return that kick on Seymour last week...where's the love?

Side note: Any news on the injuries to Crosby's RB and WR? Why hasn't the commish released this week's injury report?

Old Rivalries Die Hard

At a recent family function, my great uncles and father were discussing high school sports. My uncle was a pretty good player for NDWH back in the mid 1950s. He and his brother were discussing the glory days of the District League, and how it was tops in their day. Then, they said it all shifted during the great suburban sprawl of the 1960s. The Housatonic League was king from then on. My grandfather was a lineman at Derby, well before the glory days (read early 1940s). My uncle played fullback and baseball for Amity. I learned to love football watching the early 90s Housy games. Got to see (and scrimmaged against) the McIntosh's. I was there the day Seymour students stormed the field at Derby. While back then, there were the East Havens, Sheehans, and Lyman Halls of the league, the Housy was a great league.

What's left of the Housatonic League? Most of its members play in the SCC. Seymour is an NVL team. I'm willing to bet that either/both Woodland and Oxford would have joined the Housatonic League, had it still existed. The SCC is good. The NVL is good. But the rivarly isn't there, and when it is, it's forced. Consider this, Derby has added a Tech school to it's roster. If every week was a classic, like in the old days, would Derby have fallen off the map? Wouldn't you rather watch Seymour play a Cheshire, Amity, or Derby this week? Instead, Wildcat fans have to watch the Kennedy Eagle single wing come to town this weekend. HELL, right now, I'd take a North Haven. Plus, it's early October, and had the old leagues and rules existed right now, at some point, Ansonia and Derby would have tangled. Instead, NVL fans are stuck with an 11th awful NVL game. Some SCC schools haven't even scheduled an 11th game.

What about an all (almost) Valley League? If the town is south of Waterbury, and it touches either the Housatonic or Naugatuck Rivers, CT could have a seriously stacked league, with classics every week. Ansonia, Derby, Naugatuck, Oxford, Seymour, Shelton, Woodland...throw in Cheshire, Amity, Holy Cross, and a Pomperaug or Masuk...WOW.

Consider this CIAC, how much have fuel costs risen in the past year? How much will they rise? How can it be fixed? Just throwing these thoughts out there.

Everyone else...you can now complain.

FYI

91-0 game tough for both teams
Associated Press

ESTERO, Fla. - The Estero High football staff gathered in head coach Rich Dombroski's office late Friday, almost in stunned silence.
Earlier that night, Estero lost to Naples High by 13.
Not by 13 points. By 13 touchdowns. That's right: Naples 91, Estero 0.

All-purpose back Greg Pratt helped Naples pile on the points.
The rout fallout has been growing since the game ended.
"Hey," offered Estero defensive line coach Pat Hayes after the one-sided affair, "I didn't even know 91 was a multiple of seven."
With that, the coaches all got a much-needed laugh.
A half-hour away in Naples, Eagles coach Bill Kramer—the man on the winning end—could use one of those.
He looked at the scoreboard late in the game, saw 91-0, and said he felt sick to his stomach. Kramer's team ran only 31 plays and he kept most of his best players on the sideline—for the entire game in some cases. But still Kramer knew what was coming.
Soon after the game ended, his inbox began filling with angry e-mails, some from Estero parents wondering why so many points were necessary, some from Naples parents wondering why their kids didn't play more in an effort to pad their stats.
"There's only one way to describe it," Kramer said. "Just bizarre."
The schools aren't far off in size: Estero has about 1,400 high schoolers, Naples roughly 1,700.
But the pedigree of the football programs couldn't be more different.
Estero is rebuilding from the lowest level, with Dombroski in his first year at the school and having inherited a program that had simply crumbled. Naples is the reigning state Class 3A champion, and a contender to win the title again. Naples has players committed to Division I schools like Ohio State already and a roster filled with talent at every position. Estero has no college prospects and only about 25 healthy or so players remaining on its roster.
"Some of us, most of us, well, all of us were intimidated," said Tyler Eastridge, a free safety who may be exaggerating when he says he weighs a 150 pounds.
Naples led 70-0 at the half; only four of the 1,420 games reported by member schools to the Florida High School Athletic Association this season have seen teams score more than 70 points.
"It was David versus Goliath," Dombroski said, "and David didn't have a stone to throw."
The national record books are incomplete, but a score like 91-0 won't register a blip on the list of all-time defeats. It wasn't even the most lopsided score in the country this weekend—in Ohio, Beechcroft beat Centennial 96-0, taking knees on plays in the fourth quarter to avoid triple figures.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, five teams have scored more than 200 points in a game, with the record believed to be 256 by Haven (Ky.) High in 1927.
Dombroski isn't blaming Naples.
"Naples did absolutely nothing wrong," Dombroski said. "We just didn't do anything right."

Kramer has been in this spot before.

In 2001, the Golden Eagles scored 63 first-quarter points and beat Lely High — ironically, where Dombroski's girlfriend teaches today—85-0, and Kramer suddenly became the target of perceptions that he intentionally ran up the score.
But in that game, just as on Friday, Naples had some of its starters not play at all, and others just for one or two series.

Carlos Hyde paves the way
"We've been through it before and you never want to go through it again," Kramer said. "There were people ready to burn my house."
It's an unsettling time again.
The Naples Daily News ran a poll asking if Kramer and his team "should be ashamed" over the result, and by Monday afternoon, the vote was nearly dead-even: 239 no, 225 yes.
Hearing that, even Dombroski shook his head. He e-mailed Kramer on Monday to reiterate that Naples did nothing wrong, but that's hardly the only opinion swirling around Naples these days.
"My daughter plays basketball and there's a local team that's really good and when they're about to score 100, there's no polls about that," Kramer said. "When the local lacrosse team wins 24-0, where's the outrage? Or when kids win 6-0, 6-0 in tennis? We score 10 touchdowns and everybody loses their minds.
"The real irony is we've got some of our parents upset that their kids didn't play or didn't play enough. And you just say, 'Wow."'
Dombroski knew when he took the Estero job that there would be days like Friday, but he said the 91-0 thumping might help him turn the program around.
"We won't forget this. I won't forget this," said Dombroski, whose freshman program is off to a 4-1-1 start this year, a sign that better days could be ahead for Estero. "We're not going to lay down. We're going to fight for 48 minutes, every time we're out there."
So on Monday afternoon, when school got out at 1:45, the Estero High football team headed to its locker room and prepared for practice. New scouting reports were waiting for them, and soon the team headed onto the field for practice, their blue jerseys whipping in the wind as they stretched.
"Our team might not be winning or might not be on top right now," said right guard Mike Perez. "But we all have to do the best we can do. We can't forget that."
And so, they were back to work, which they'll need. This week, Estero plays Cape Coral—a team that nearly beat Naples.

SCC Week 6 and Thoughts

Green Dragons and Academics in the SCC...

So I guess Hamden is the class of the SCC. They did do everything in their power to allow the Gaels to win. Shelton was well on their way up 2 scores late in the first half and squandering it oh so fast. That is what changed this game. Hamden has lots of skilled players duh..it is Hamden with an enrollment of 2000 kids, they should. It is nice to see Benoit actually does something with the talent. I just hope he does not win any coach of the year awards, after all he is doing what every good coach would do with all those players. He is doing it pretty fast though. It just goes to show you how bad those before him were. They can likely run the table now, while the Gaels need to win every week and then pray……Hillhouse is the other undefeated. They play Prep which is better than some of the stiffs they have played thus far. On Halloween they should be all fired up as they play at Shelton. Imagine the Titans of Sheehan are 4-1 as is Foran 4-1. The sad thing is that these teams may make the playoffs in their state divisions while some of the real good teams in the league get left out.

Week 6 Games

Shelton (3-2) at Jonathan Law (2-3)Last week: Shelton lost to Hamden 35-30; Law lost to Guilford 21-0
After that 1 year of excitement in Law it seems like the old SWC team we all knew they were.

Prep (2-2) at Hillhouse (5-0)Last week: Prep lost to Amity 21-20; Hillhouse defeated Lyman Hall 41-7
Will Prep get it done?? In New Haven at 3:30 yeah right…..Then again it still is Hillhouse..

Guilford (3-2) at Xavier (4-1)Last week: Guilford defeated Law 21-0; Xavier defeated Branford 27-25
Xavier great line play. And the great Will Tye…They actually have a shot in LL..

Lyman Hall (2-3) at Amity (2-3)Last week: Lyman Hall lost to Hillhouse 41-7; Amity defeated Prep 21-20
Lyman hall is really bad. Amity is just average….Why would you go to this game unless it was because you had family interests, I guess…..

Branford (2-3) at Hamden (5-0)Last week: Branford lost to Xavier 27-25; Hamden defeated Shelton 35-30
Hamden is fun to watch. Branford likely runs the same offense they have for years.. It sure looked better when they had players to run it.

Cheshire (3-2) at Sheehan (4-1)Last week: Cheshire defeated ND 31-20; Sheehan defeated East Haven 39-7
To me this is the most interesting game on the schedule. This could be fun if Sheehan is for real, and it could suck if Sheehan is a product of its schedule thus far.

Hand (3-2) at North Haven (2-3)Last week: Hand defeated West Haven 38-20; North Haven lost to Foran 28-27
Playoff match up last year. Yeah…Last year

Cross (4-1) at East Haven (0-5)Last week: Cross defeated Derby 37-8; East Haven lost to Sheehan 39-7
East Haven has a beautiful trailer for its marching band. They also have a nice turf field and a state of the art scoreboard. Seriously, the trailer for the band is really nice!

West Haven (1-3) at Foran (4-1)Last week: West Haven lost to Hand 38-20; Foran defeated North Haven 28-27
I really hope this is the shot of reality for Foran…….It could very well be..Hey Bevino they will be a little better than Platt Tech

Notre Dame (0-4) at Derby (1-4)Last week: Notre Dame lost to Cheshire 31-20; Derby lost to Cross 37-8
Well ND if you had some ba--s to schedule an 11th game maybe you to could be 1-4 coming into this game…I would go for the fried dough and actually stay if they let me sit on top of the ambulance and work the sirens. I always thought that would be cool……

Week 6-NVL

Ansonia and Seymour did their part last week, so people better circle a few dates on their calendars. First, October 30, when the Wildcats meet the Holy Cross Crusaders. The 'Saders may be down this year, but Seymour has taken an undefeated team against them twice in the past 10 years, and both times left with a loss (though last time it was clearly due to some fishy officiating). The next date is November 7, when the Chargers clash with the Crosby Bulldogs at Jimmy Lee. After a tough loss this week, expect the Dogs to regroup, and be poised for a solid game early next month. If all goes well until then, then folks can circle Thursday, November 13, for a good old fashioned Valley Football Game between the Chargers and Wildcats at Nolan Field. Everybody has to do their part, but from the looks of things, both teams should enter that game playing for both the NVL and Brass Division titles (sorry Hawks and Raiders, the league champion will be decided that night). But that's looking way ahead...

Week 6 games and picks...
Watertown at Sacred Heart (Thurs)-Circle the wagons, Coach Ewald. These Injuns are coming for scalps. The Watertown running game will be too much, and October is a big month for all things orange and black. Injuns-31 Hearts-22

Ansonia at Holy Cross-Things go from bad to worse for the Green & Gold. Chargers-52 Crusaders-12

Crosby at Naugatuck-DOG FIGHT! Crosby is pissed about the lost opportunities against Seymour. Plasky's pups get a full dose of the Bulldogs' wrath, it's a good thing the Naugy Doggies have their full roster (finally). Hope it makes a difference. This one may get out of hand. Bulldogs-38 Greyhounds-20

Kennedy at Seymour-Eagles single wing has given Cats fits the past few years. Halftime adjustments have been the key to the most recent games, as Seymour settled down and began to control the game. Seymour broke out some interesting formations of its own Friday, so who knows. DeBarber Field will have hosted 2 Boys and 5 Girls soccer games between 10/8 and game time on 10/17. Expect the playing surface to be torn up (its what happens when crab grass is accepted as real grass), to help keep a speedy Eagles team in check, as the Wildcats' continue chewing up turf in the ground game. Wildcats-43 Eagles-20

Wolcott at Torrington-Turns out to be a great matchup. Raiders have the skill players to make this interesting, and are coming off a heartbreaker versus Woodland. They're really buying into Coach Dunaj's philosophy up there in southern Massachusetts. They Eagles may still be brooding after a pounding by the Chargers. Expect this one to be physical. This could be the game of the week. If it turns out not to be, at least you got a nice view of the foliage on the ride up Route 8. Red Raiders-24 Eagles-21

Woodland at Wilby (Sat)-Regional School District 16 will be riding the wave from a big win up in Torrington. All Wilby has is the advantage of the worst home field in the league...hey, at least they haven't cleaned the one Port-o-Potty on the field in the last 6 years. Ever notice, the pressbox at Wilby is just a bus stop that's been raised up? This could get uglier than some of the girls at Mr. Happy's if Woodland builds on its momentum. Reg. 16 Hawks-25 Scaredy Cats-6

Thoughts, gentlemen?
I'll post Mike and the Jaffman later this week...you know, for its unintentional comedy scale.

Farmington at Hall, 1:30 p.m.
Hall played pitiful in week #5 vs New Britain.Even that effort will be enough for a home win against the helpless Indians .Expect the Warriors to step it up against Farmington and win BIG.

Windsor at Wethersfield, 2:00 p.m.
Windsor wins its 5th game of the year against the sinking (3 losses in a row)Wethersfield Eagles at Frank Cottone Field. If Windsor plays a strong complete game they win big. A half game effort(something the Warriors are sometimes known for) they still win a closer game
